Type Locality:   Freshwater of the Maningues Coast.   This refers to the Senegal/Gambia coastline.

The area of distribution is along the Senegal and Gambia coastline east towards the Nile River of eastern Africa.  In the south, this species is found in Cameroon, Central African Republic and Zaire.

The habitat is generally quiet water of small rivers, streams and swamps. as well as water in savannahs.

Considered a difficult species to propagate.  It is a typical top spawner using floating mops.  It is suggested to incubate the eggs in a separate small container for about 1-014 days.   Fry are small at birth and infusoria may be the best choice for feeding them.  There are reports that state baby brine shrimp can be taken.
