Fundulopanchax Myers, 1924.

Myers, G. S. 1924. A new poeciliid fish from the Congo, with remarks on funduline genera. American Museum Novitates (116): 9 pp., 4 figs. [description: pp. 4-6]

Type species: Fundulus gularis var. caerulea Boulenger, 1915, by original designation, originally proposed as a subgenus. [junior synonym of Fundulus sjoestedtiLönnberg, 1895 = Fundulopanchax sjoestedti (Lönnberg, 1895)]

Fundulopanchax Myers, 1924b: Myers, 1931; Parenti, 1981; Amiet, 1987, 1991; Skelton, 1988; Costa, 1990a; van der Zee & Wildekamp, 1994; Murphy & Collier, 1997.

[Murphy & Collier (1999), using 50 species and population variants of species, were able to support the monophyletic nature of the genera Aphyosemion andFundulopanchax. They mapped their phylogenetic relationships against various hypothesized species groups (Scheel, 1990) and by inference against previously proposed subgenera. Raddaella and Callopanchax are no longer considered to be members of Fundulopanchax as found in Parenti (1981). According to the findings of Murphy and Collier (1997, 1999), Aphyosemion (Raddaella) kunzi belongs to Aphyosemion while Callopanchax is a member of a monophyletic group which includes Archiaphyosemion, Scriptaphyosemion, and Epiplatys. Fundulopanchax has one main lineage and contains Fundulopanchax scheeli (new usage in Murphy & Collier, 1999) and members of the subgenera Gularopanchax, Paraphyosemion, and Paludopanchax.]

Subgenera:  Gularopanchax Radda, 1977.  Paludopanchax Radda, 1977.  Paraphyosemion Radda, 1977.
